Lock Down

Well today was one of the scariest days I've had teaching. We had a lock down. For those of you who don't know what a lock down is here's the scoop: All doors must be locked, no one leaves or enters any where, shades are pulled over windows, and then you wait until the all clear. This is not my first lock down but this was the first one we've had while we are temporarily living in the trailer-hood. Being on lock down in a trailer versus a building causes your stress level to rise to a degree of ten. Fourth grade is the farthest trailer from the main building  or office trailer. And we are right at the fence edge to the street.
Becky and I were chatting about Math when a para came and told us that we were on lock down. I grabbed my keys and locked both our doors. Becky was just getting ready to leave and pick up her kids at P.E. when this happens. She can't get them and they can't come to her! Everyone has to stay put. So we wait and we wait and we wait. I get a call on my cell from the office that there has been a bank robbery in the area and we are to stay put. So we continue with our business as usual. The kids are a little anxious but nothing too crazy. Then as we are trying to distract ourselves with stuff to do we hear someone trying to open my door. I was talking to Becky and even the kids were talking but we all heard it. I asked the kids if it was one of them and it wasn't. I went into full-on Momma Bear mode. Everyone had to get away from the windows and doors and we moved to the front of the classroom by the bathroom. Which is the room we would all get in to hide if something were to of happened.
I call on the walkie-talkie and ask if someone is out walking around and/or checking doors. Nope. So then I say that someone tried opening my door. The response not comforting and nothing ever came of it. We finally got the okay to release kids at 3:45. We were locked down for fifty minutes. I would rather be locked down in my tiny third floor room any day over the trailer-hood. I hope this doesn't happen again the rest of the year.

  1. I HATE lockdowns!! My building is the smallest building and it's the farthest away from anything as well....we are about 2 blocks from the office building!! Our campus is HUGE and spread out because of growth and such :( But, on a military base, if you have a lockdown you can't talk or anything. You literally sit and try to keep a classroom of 2nd graders quiet!! Ugh!
