Since last week we have been having some issues with Wyatt eating; remember the whole maybe he's sick issue. He has been giving Cheryl and Mike a terrible time when feeding him. He will arch his back and scream out. He often won't finish a bottle and is constantly wiggling and worming his way anywhere. He doesn't do this for me but he hasn't been an angel by any means. I'm not sure what his issue is. Is this normal for a baby to suddenly want less food? Why all of a sudden is he not wanting to eat from the bottle even though he has ate from these bottles since he was born? Do I need to get a bigger bottle? Do I try the fast flow nipples? These are all questions that I'm wondering and not sure if any of them have to do with Wyatt and his not eating. The only thing I could remotely find in my "What to Expect the First Year" book was about babies who reject the breast and why. The only thing I could even phantom was that he's teething and his gums are swollen and it's hurting to suck.
I'm at a loss, so please any advice is greatly appreciated and couldn't hurt. Has anyone else experienced this and what was it?!
FYI-He's eating 6 ounces every 3-4 hours and burps every 2 ounces.
i wish I could help you on this one, but Layken was breast fed for a year and never used a bottle. I would guess getting a different stage of bottle...he may just be impatient like his mommy :)
ReplyDeleteTo me the arching the back and screaming sounds typical of reflux, but if he doesn't seem to have a problem afterwards and doesn't spit up much that might not be it? Although Jack's reflux is silent and he hardly ever spits up - it just goes up burning and back down burning without ever coming all the way out! Does he cry out randomly and have a fit? Is he drooling more then normal - I know that might be harder to detect at this age vs when jack was only 6 weeks old and there wasn't a reason for drooling at all? Is he fighting being burped? These are all things Jack did and what led us to his reflux diagnosis so I'm just thinking out loud. They say reflux will appear most commonly by 3-6 months so I don't think it's too late for him to start showing signs now.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand he might be getting bored due to the flow of the nipple and maybe a faster one would help. But if the formula runs out the side of his mouth or he chokes it's too fast - I'm sure you know that.
Seems odd that he doesn't do it so much for you as for others - attachment issue already maybe?
Just trying to brainstorm!
I think Darci's thoughts are both possibilities.....definitely. Maybe the faster flow nipples? Maybe he's really hungry and not getting it as fast as he wants. Miss M went through stages where she ate a ton and then didn't hardly want anything but I think that started later on. I am so not much help on this one. Good luck momma!
